Claude Code plugins: what they are and how to install them
Updated Oct 26, 2026 · Sources listed at the end
A Claude Code plugin is a directory that packages extensions (skills, subagents, hooks and MCP servers) so you can install them together. Type /plugin in a Claude Code session and install one from the Discover tab, which lists plugins from your marketplaces.1
What is inside a plugin
The manifest, .claude-plugin/plugin.json, gives the plugin its name and optional version, description and metadata. Components can include:1
- Skills:
SKILL.mdinstructions Claude loads when relevant, and that you can also run as a command - Agents: subagent definitions
- Hooks: commands that run at fixed points
- MCP servers: tool servers Claude Code connects to while the plugin is enabled
Plugins vs MCP servers
An MCP server adds tools. A plugin can bundle MCP servers together with instructions and automation, which makes it easier to share a whole workflow with a team.12
