What is AI pair programming?
Updated Oct 26, 2026 · Sources listed at the end
AI pair programming means coding with an AI assistant as your partner: it suggests code, answers questions about the codebase and makes changes you ask for, while you stay in charge of design and review. The term borrows from human pair programming; Aider, for example, describes itself as “AI pair programming in your terminal”.1
How it differs from vibe coding
In AI pair programming you read and review what the AI writes. In vibe coding you do not, by definition.2
Common setups
- In the editor: inline suggestions plus a chat or agent panel (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, JetBrains AI).
- In the terminal: an agent that edits files and commits with you (Aider, Claude Code).
Our AI pair programmers list compares these on free plans and prices.
Getting good results
Keep changes small, ask the assistant to explain unfamiliar code, and review diffs before accepting them. GitHub’s own guidance says to carefully review and test generated code.3
